Straube Center in the News by Susan Kalan Stewartsville's
John Stinger stands outside Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill Gallery, where
he had a recent exhibition of his landscape art. Local artist enjoys painting, helping others succeed John Stinger of Stewartsville has been a professional painter and artist for more than 30 years. He's won numerous awards for his landscapes which have been exhibited in galleries throughout the region. Most recently, he won a first-place, blue ribbon in Warren County's annual Senior Citizen Art Show in Belvidere for his oil, "Misty River," painted on location along the Delaware River. Now Stinger has turned the tables around, spending much of his time creating opportunities for other artists. Together with CEO Win Straube ("one of my biggest supporters"), a space has been provided on the Straube complex in Pennington, N.J., for dedicated artists. Stinger, who serves as Straube's curator, says artists have an opportunity to participate in six, bi-monthly shows free of charge and with no percentage of work sold ever collected. As an artist, Stinger specializes in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York landscapes, river and snow scenes. He paints primarily in oils on location, but usually finishes work in his studio. Born in Trenton, Stinger studied painting and commercial art at the School of Industrial Arts. He worked with a New York-based ad agency for more than 30 years, while continuing art studies with nationally known Bucks County landscape painter Robert Seufert. He's also studied with internationally known realist Jeremy Lipking. Stinger's daughter is Karla Stingerstein, also an artist who has her studio in residence at the Banana Factory in Bethlehem. Hometown: Stewartsville Web site: stingerfineart.com Style: Living in New Hope and being surrounded by Pennsylvania Impressionists inspired him to develop his own style of contemporary impressionistic painting. "Paint what you want to paint but follow your own path. That's how to stand out and be recognized," Stinger says. Knows his roots: Won first prize in home-town contest for his painting of the Delaware River. Since then, the river's edge has always fascinated him. Catch him if you can: Exhibits at the Straube Center in Pennington, where current Fall Fine Art Show runs through Dec. 28. Solo shows in 2009 at Muhlenberg College Art Gallery in Temple, Pa.
